How to Choose the Best Natural Skincare Products for Your Family
When I started paying closer attention to skincare, it wasn’t just for myself—it was for my whole family. During pregnancy, my skin became more sensitive, and none of my usual products worked the same way. That’s when I began researching natural butters and oils, looking for gentle yet effective alternatives. I quickly realised how many mainstream skincare products, even the ones marketed as “gentle” or “natural,” still contained unnecessary chemicals and synthetic additives.
That’s what led me to create my own balm, using only natural and organic butters, oils and waxes — simple, nourishing, and completely free from anything that could irritate the skin. But with so many products on the market, how do you know which ones are truly natural and safe for your family?
Here are some key things to look for when choosing natural skincare products that actually support and protect the skin.
Check the Ingredients List
One of the most important things to do when buying skincare is to read the ingredients list. Just because a product is labeled “natural” or “organic” doesn’t always mean it’s free from harmful additives. Look for ingredients that actually benefit the skin, rather than just making the product feel nice.
Good ingredients to look for:
• Plant-based butters and oils like shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, and coconut oil
• Natural waxes like beeswax, which provide a breathable protective barrier
• Soothing ingredients like calendula, chamomile, and aloe vera
• Essential fatty acids from oils like rosehip, almond, or avocado to nourish the skin
Ingredients to be cautious of:
• Petroleum-based ingredients like mineral oil and petrolatum (they coat the skin but don’t nourish it)
• Synthetic fragrances and dyes, which can cause irritation
• Parabens and preservatives that may disrupt the skin’s natural balance
• SLS/SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate), which is often found in cleansers and can be drying
Choose Products with Fewer Ingredients
A shorter ingredient list is often better. Many conventional creams and lotions contain a long list of stabilisers, preservatives, and synthetic additives that don’t actually do much for the skin. The simpler the formula, the more likely it is to contain only what your skin actually needs.
That’s exactly why I formulated my balms with just few key ingredients. No unnecessary fillers, no synthetic stabilisers—just pure, natural goodness.
Prioritise Multi-Purpose Products
When you’re buying skincare for the whole family, it helps to choose versatile products that work for multiple purposes. Instead of buying separate products for different concerns, look for one or two high-quality natural products that can do it all.
My balm, for example, is something I use on my face, my baby’s skin, dry hands, lips, and even cuticles. It replaces multiple creams and keeps our skincare routine simple but effective.
Other great multi-purpose products include:
• Coconut oil for cleansing, moisturising, and soothing irritation
• Aloe vera gel for sunburns, rashes, and hydration
• Calendula balm for healing dry or irritated skin
Avoid Greenwashing & Misleading Labels
Many brands use terms like “natural,” “organic,” or “clean beauty” without actually being transparent about their ingredients. Always look beyond the front label and check the actual ingredients list. If a product claims to be natural but still contains petroleum-based ingredients, synthetic preservatives, or artificial fragrances, it’s not truly natural skincare.
Choose Skincare That Supports Skin Health, Not Just Immediate Relief
A lot of conventional skincare products work by coating the skin rather than actually healing and strengthening it. Petroleum-based creams, for example, form a barrier over the skin, but they don’t provide any real nourishment. Over time, this can lead to skin that becomes dependent on external moisture rather than maintaining its own natural balance.
Natural ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, and beeswax work with the skin, helping to restore its natural barrier, reduce irritation, and lock in hydration without clogging pores. That’s why my balm is so effective—it nourishes and protects without interfering with the skin’s ability to function properly.
The Bottom Line
Choosing the best natural skincare for your family doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By focusing on high-quality, simple ingredients, avoiding unnecessary additives, and opting for multi-purpose products, you can build a skincare routine that truly supports and nourishes the skin.
Since switching to natural skincare, I’ve noticed a huge difference—not just for me, but for my whole family. My baby’s skin stays soft and healthy, and I no longer worry about unnecessary chemicals. Even when my skin feels dry due to weather changes or water exposure, my balm quickly restores hydration and balance.
If you’re looking for skincare that actually works without the unnecessary additives, always check the ingredients, keep it simple, and choose products that truly care for the skin in the long run.
